Native Americans were initially enslaved in the New World, but their populations declined dramatically due to disease, warfare, and harsh labor conditions. As a result, European colonists turned to Africa for a more resilient labor force. Africans were more immune to certain diseases and had agricultural skills that suited the plantation system. This shift was also driven by the transatlantic slave trade, which enabled the mass importation of enslaved Africans to meet labor demands.
