Being diagnosed with any type of personality disorder doesn't necessarily require checking into a mental health facility. Many people who suffer from a variety of personality disorders sometimes seek treatment on their own, or with the help of others. In most cases these setbacks are treatable with various forms of therapy or mild doses of medication; however, extreme cases are usually remedied or mitigated by employing the use of psychotropic prescription medications. Some of the more common ailments that fall under the category of personality disorder include the Obsessive-Compulsive Type (OCPD), Antisocial Type (APD), and bipolar or manic-depressive disorder.
These conditions are quite different in terms of consistently displayed behavior. Those afflicted with obsessive compulsion reveal a variety of symptoms, which in many cases involves hypersensitivity and an overwhelming sense of responsibility, guilt, and self-righteousness. A repetitive nature can be attached to the aforementioned symptoms, and rarely are they self-diagnosed. The mere mention of seeking medical care can trigger a defiant stance on the topic, yet after all is said and done, there is no cure. The most commonly prescribed medications to mitigate the symptoms include a number anti-anxiety drugs and antidepressants as well.
Antisocial Personality Disorder can occur as early as age 15, when individuals begin to foster wayward propensities such as lying, cheating, stealing, manipulating and/or exploiting others, and do so without remorse. Aggressive and violent behavior usually escalates into the criminal type. Causation can be attributed to increased testosterone levels that cause aggression, which stands to reason that more males are predominantly affected by this disorder. In terms of treatment, there is no magic potion. The condition usually peaks in males during their late teens to early twenties, and growing out of it may be the only remedy.
Bipolar disorder is often measured in individuals by sporadic mood swings, where the highs are mania-driven and the lows are abysmal. This personality disorder is indelible; brain chemistry is compromised by the misfiring of synapses that can result in overstimulation and exhaustion within a matter of hours. A combination of consistent and constant therapy, support, education, management, and medication are all integral parts of stabilizing this condition.
