Who was the president when the civil war ended?

Abraham Lincoln was President when Lee surrendered his army at Appomattox Courthouse . Purists may tell you that some fighting went on afterward and the war really ended after Andrew Johnson took office.

Nearly two weeks after the assassination of Lincoln, General Johnston surrendered his army to the Union commander WT Sherman, famous for making war on helpless civilians.

Although Lee's surrender to Grant essentially ended most hostilities, the last battle was Palmito Ranch on May 12th and 13th.

Ironically, the South won the battle.
