What is the role of ambassador in the conduct of foreign relataions?

An ambassador has a special role in a relationship with a foreign government because he/she can have a closer and personal relationship with the head of the country they are assigned. They run the embassy in that nation which is technically considered US territory. All of this helps in dealing with issues and problems that may come up in foreign relations.
