This problem is quite common and it happens simply because certain parts of the gearbox are worn out. Consider that your bike is twenty years old. Has it been driven a lot? Parhaps. If you plan to own and drive it in the future, then you should repair the transmission. Either do it yourself or have it done by a motorcycle mechanic. The latter is safer if you have little experience with repair work. In order to explain the nature of the problem the name of the various parts of a gearbox have to be understood. What matters here is that there are rotating wheels of different sizes inside the gearbox. These wheels are simply known as gears, or more precisely, cogwheels. Gears have so-called cut teeth, also known as cogs, that are interlocked and meshed with other wheels. When gears of different sizes interlock they produce different speeds. The gears that slide on the two shafts in a motorcycle gearbox also have what is called "dogs". The "dogs" are metal knobs that fit into holes in the gears beside them, locking the two gears together. The sliding gears are moved back and forth by so-called shifter forks which are moved by means of a shifter drum. So when you change gears with your left foot, you change the position of the gear wheels in the gearbox. If a motorcycle transmission tends to jump out of gear under power, that is, when there is constant gas, not on deceleration, then you should look at the gearbox "dogs" and the holes that they go into. You should also inspect the sides of the shifter forks for wear. In case there is noticeable wear at all on these things then they need to be replaced. In summary, you may have to replace the gears, the dogs, the shafts or all three. In case you do this, a general overhaul of the gearbox is recommended, including a change of all gear cogs, bearings and seals. There is one point you should consider. If you shift into second gear carefully and take your time doing it, and then nothing goes wrong with the second gear, then the fault is probably a worn shift fork. You can probably repair the gearbox yourself with a few simple tools and so save money. You can buy a gearbox kit for your bike, which also has all the things you need. But you should consider buying a second hand gearbox for this bike, as it may be in good condition and save you money.
