What is the most important sentence of an essay that is usually at the first or last sentence?

The thesis statement. It may not be the first, but it is almost always restated near the conclusion.

My teacher calls it the attention grabber. That's always what I've called it, as well. Usually it would begin with a question, quote or joke pertaining to what the essay is about.
