What are the probable short comings in granting autonomy to journalist?

When a government allows freedom of the press, there is no guarantee that the press coverage of that government is going to be consistently favorable. Autonomous journalists are free to say whatever they think is the truth, and there are times when the press will wind up opposing some government policy or action, which can easily lead to reduced popularity for that government, and unpopular governments can be thrown out of office.
