The potential for injury comes from the sudden deceleration and impact with the ground or another surface (rock, tree, water). Except on very soft surfaces such as deep, loose snow, the deceleration can cause damage to the brain and internal organs. The impact can break bones, splinter ribs, or fracture the skull. All of these injuries are potentially, but not necessarily, fatal.
