The key is to avoid being kidnapped! Prevention can include:
- Stay in groups.
- Stay in public places.
- Watch over your friends.
- Don't go up to stranger's vehicles-- no matter what they say to you. Keep your distance.
- Do not "help" a stranger--unless your parent says it is okay to do. "I lost my puppy--can you help me" is a common tactic to abduct a child. Ignore any offers, including candy or money.
- Report strangers you see in the neighborhood.
- If your gut says there is something wrong, pay attention.
- If physically grabbed (e.g. someone takes hold of your arm), is to drop to the ground and scream. No one will try to drag a child or adult who is lying on the ground screaming. Be "dead weight" so it is hard to pick you up to carry you.
- If you have to fight, drop to the ground, roll onto your back and start kicking and hitting--until help comes.
- Don't scream "help"-- instead, keep screaming "Call 911"-- until the police come.
- Yell, "I'm being kidnapped".
- Do not ever go anywhere with any stranger OR anyone without your parent's permission. That means, do not walk even 5 feet away and never, ever get into a stranger's car.
If abducted, kidnapped---
- Don't let them transport you from the original place-- fight.
- Most people must rely on your own wits.
- Some people fight.
- Some people talk their way out.
- Whatever you can do to stay alive is the "right" thing.
