By placing the blame and the cost at the feet of Germany it led to the crippling depression in German after the war. This led to the rise of Hitler and WWII. It also brought about the end of the Ottoman, Austrian and Russian empires. The end of the Russian empire gave way to the Soviet state and the cold war which dominated the twentieth century global political theater.
