Free blacks were unpopular in the North, where about 250,000 of them lived. Several states forbade their entrance, most denied them the right to vote, and some barred blacks from public schools.

Anti black feeling was in fact frequently stronger in the North than in the South. The gifted and eloquent former slave Frederick Douglass, an abolitionist and self educated orator of rare power, was several times mobbed and beaten by northern rowdies. White northerners often professed to like the race but disliked individual blacks.
