In the movie twilight wqhen the cullens were playing baseball why did edward or Esme push Bella out of the way?

They pushed Bella out of the way because the other vampires were coming and they were the human-eating kind. Because Bella's smell appeals to all vampires, they just wanted to gobble her up. But, Edward loved Bella so much he wanted to save her.
