When a pure crystalline solid is mixed with a different compound, its melting point can either decrease or exhibit broadening. This phenomenon, known as melting point depression, occurs due to the disruption of the orderly crystal lattice structure, which requires less energy (lower temperature) to break apart. Additionally, if the mixture results in the formation of a eutectic composition, the melting point can drop significantly compared to the individual components.
