According to her book 'The First Four Years', Laura had very difficult pregnancies and felt very ill throughout the whole of both of them. This is purely speculation on my part, but I suspect that after the trauma of losing her son, Laura made a decision that she never wanted to go through pregnancy, childbirth or the loss of a child ever again. I speculate that she probably either stopped having a sexual relationship with Almanzo, or at the least was very careful about her timing... Or possibly she was simply unable to have more children. Another answer on here indicates that Rose was unable to have any more children after bearing a son who was either stillborn or died shortly after birth. Maybe it was a condition that ran in the family.

Some people speculate that illness (such as the diphtheria they contracted in 1888) affected Almanzo's fertility.
