Overpopulation among poor families may have numerous causes, including:
- lack of Birth Control
- lack of access to birth control / medical care (which seems contradictory since pregnant women need medical care)
- medical reasons to not use birth control pills (ex. history of blood clots)
- ignorance or lack of education
- apathy
- being pressured by a partner NOT to use birth control
- a female who does not feel she can stand up to or argue with a partner who refuses to use condoms
- a female who believes having a child will "keep" a man with her
- religious upbringing which decries birth control
- cultural background
- Children in poor countries are needed for labour, such as working in the fields and collecting water.
- Poor countries generally have no pensions, so people need their children to support them when they can no longer work, either through illness or old age.
- In poor countries, infant mortality rates are high, so people tend to have as many children as possible.
