Yes, children need to believe that there is someone mighty and powerful watching them, this is important because kids need to have someone they can seek help in when all hope is lost. i mainly mean god and Jesus, but everyone has their own beliefs

Answer:

Imposing religious belief on children is a common occurrence - many regard it as wrong. At the simplest level as the children mature they may nor wish to be associated with the religion but will be unable to escape ties to it (there is no termination process for association with a religion)

The process is harmful as it uses the parents ability to make choices for the child without regard for the wishes of the child. At the same time it is a source of confusion. Some invisible friends - Santa Claus, the Tooth Fairy - are later revealed to be imaginary, others (deities) are claimed to be real.

All in all no harm comes from not having a religious inculcation. Children will learn altruism, honesty and other positive values by observing the parents behavior. Being good just "because God is watching" is perhaps the least satisfying reason for being good. Similarly feeling that the whole Universe will change its rules to make your life better is a pointless effort.
