The explorer of Panama, particularly Vasco Núñez de Balboa, was primarily searching for a westward route to the riches of the East Indies. In 1513, he became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from the New World, believing it would lead to vast wealth. Balboa was also motivated by the prospect of finding gold and other resources, as well as claiming territory for Spain. His expeditions ultimately contributed to the Spanish colonization of the region.
