Why do princesses become queens by marriage but princes don't become kings by marriage?

To the best of my knowledge, a King out ranks a Queen...so a Princess who becomes Queen cannot be out ranked by her husband, since a person inherits the throne...so he's known as Prince and as the Queen's Consort.
