What agency performs US government background checks?

The U.S. government background checks are primarily conducted by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) through its Federal Investigative Services (FIS). Additionally, the Department of Defense (DoD) conducts background checks for military personnel and certain defense contractors. Other agencies may also perform checks specific to their needs or for particular security clearances.
