Granville Sharp was a prominent British abolitionist known for his influential role in the fight against slavery in the late 18th century. He was instrumental in the legal case that led to the landmark decision in Somerset v. Stewart (1772), which effectively declared that slavery was unsupported by English law. Sharp also co-founded the Society for Effecting the Abolition of the Slave Trade in 1787 and was involved in efforts to promote education and rights for freed slaves. His advocacy and writings significantly contributed to the growing abolitionist movement in Britain.
