What battle was the turning point when the French decided to help the Patriots?

The French were sympathetic to the American cause from the beginning. The lands lost due to the French and Indian War (Seven Years War) was a driving force behind the French involvement which was covert at first, but after the Battle of Saratoga, France became fully involved.
