A traceback is a strategy used in Epidemiology to locate the origin of an outbreak. Tracebacks are conducted to:

  • identify the source of an outbreak
  • limit the spread of outbreak
  • remove the source of contamination
  • determine whether a recall (in the case of contaminated food sources) will be necessary
