Bangkok was established in the mid-18th century, becoming the capital of Thailand in 1782 under King Rama I. While the area had been inhabited for centuries, it was officially recognized and developed as a city when the king moved the capital from Thonburi across the river to Bangkok. The name "Krung Thep" is often used to refer to the city, which translates to "City of Angels."
