For historical reasons the U.S. never issued a $2 coin but instead struck the oddly-denominated quarter eagle worth $2.50. Quarter eagles were issued until gold coins were withdrawn in 1933.
$2 brass coins are in common use in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, while the UK has £2 coins and the EU has €2 coins. Unfortunately politics and inertia mean it's unlikely the US will introduce a $2 coin in the foreseeable future.
