Why current flows perpendicular to equipotential surface?

because the electrons are trying to stay as far away from each other as possible (like repels like)

imagine a ball with strips of paper attached to it. if the papers lay flat or angle any way but a 90 degree, they with touch the ones in front or behind. the only way to be away from each other is to be at right angles along the ball.
