seems to me the more things you put into something to make it easier to use or operate, the more potential for failure you have. in a mechanical control system the components are fairly easy to identify and repair with a minimum of mechanical knowledge...and maybe a manual. It is also cheaper to repair and maintain than electronic controls. simplicity is the key to longevity (historically speaking). HOWEVER...electronic controls are capable of the same modulated control as a mechanical control... sometimes even better, think of an electronic fuel system on a car. the computer regulates everything from timing to fuel flow and much much more. when you ease on to the gas pedal the car responds accordingly but the whole time the computer is doing the majority of the work in the form of thousands of calculations every minute, but if that computer ever fails, it can be hard to diagnose without a Scan Tool, and expensive to replace. in addition, the components must be protected in an electronic system... free from moisture, dirt, extreme heat, and electromagnetic forces. mechanical systems..? if it squeaks you generally just have add oil.
