Starfish, or sea stars, primarily live in marine environments and are not adapted to thrive on land. They are marine echinoderms that rely on water for locomotion, feeding, and respiration through their tube feet and water vascular system. While some species can survive temporarily at low tide on rocky shores, they require a marine habitat to maintain their physiological functions and avoid desiccation. Therefore, they are fundamentally water-dwelling creatures, not land inhabitants.
