Louis Washkansky lived for 55 years, from September 2, 1913, until December 21, 1967. He is known for being the recipient of the world's first successful heart transplant, performed by Dr. Christiaan Barnard in December 1967. Unfortunately, he passed away just 18 days after the surgery due to pneumonia and other complications.
