Ratified on August 18, 1920, the 19th Amendment to the US. Constitution granted American women the right to vote's right known as woman suffrage. At the time the US was founded, its female citizens did not share all of the same rights as men, including the right to vote.
The 19th amendment was passed in 1920. The Women's suffrage movement fought hard for passage. Some women who took part were arrested and placed in mental institutions. Some chained themselves to the gate/fence of the White House.
