Why is hades the god of the underworld?

After the usurping of Cronus by his son, Zeus, the new king and his two brothers decided which realm belonged to whom in a simple dice-rolling game. Zeus won the sky and Earth, Poseidon won the sea, and Hades was left with the Underworld.
