The stomach is unable to absorb any nutrients, because its thick, muscular walls are not permeable to molecules. However, it does hold enzymes to break down proteins, but not carbohydrates.

The stomach starts to break down the food, but the absorption of nutrients etc is carried out by the Intestines' walls.
