Can you legally put a hole in a us penny?

Legally, no. The US Government owns all money and they let you "use" it, but they won't do anything if you put a hole in it. It is against the law to deface any U.S. currency, including pennies. Practically, yes you may, because the law is rarely enforced, especially in the case of pennies, which are plentiful and almost worthless.
