What does postcode sm stand for?

Postcode used for Sutton but difficult to say why it's SM (presumably the Post Office knew once.) Some say it's Sutton/Merton but most of Merton borough is in other postcode areas. More likely to be Sutton/Morden because Morden actually has a SM postcode.
