President George W. Bush nominated Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., to replace the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, who died in office. Roberts assumed the bench in 2005, and is the incumbent Chief Justice. Ironically, he was a law clerk for Rehnquist in the 1970's.
President Bush nominated Justice Samuel Alito in 2006 to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who retired in January of that year. Alito is also an incumbent.
