What is Samuel de Champlain reason for exploration?

Like many others of that era, he was searching for the Northwest Passage. This is the northern route from the Atlantic to Pacific oceans. Due to it's extreme northern route and weather conditions this was one of the most challenging discoveries of its day.

You can look at a good map of northern Canada and try to find a clear and easy to follow route from the Atlantic to Pacific. Once you have found such a path, imagine it covered with snow and ice and try to find it again.
