Paris was known to possess a particularly liberal society during the enlightenment period, beckoning hordes of scholars and artists alike to participate in a social revolution of sorts.

Particularly risquee clothing styles would reflect the city's liberal attitude, it's defiance of tradition, as well as the lowering of standards regarding sexual practices at the time.
