"Lester" is one of the most ancient surnames to come out of Britain, appearing around the 1080s, carrying the meaning of a person (or family) living in or near Leicester, the main city of Leicestershire. So a person of any faith or lineage may have subsequently lived in or near Leicester, and appropriated the surname thereby.

Some others, both Gentiles and Jews, have used the name Lester without regard to geography.
