Why is it fitting that gavroche dies in Les Miserables?

I think to answer this question would be to answer the question "Why is it fitting that joy be extinguished?" I think that's about what Gavroche symbolizes, he has so much of it in spite of his circumstances, in such contrast with the other 'miserables.' But I think his death underscores the extent to which the society as it was in its unfairness was destroying truly good things. And according to Hugo in his first description of Gavroche, society was bound to get him in the end; either he would starve, or become a criminal and lose his soul, or something else would happen either to kill him or to change him. There might be other reasons too, of course.
