Why do iguania's have a third eye?

The third eye is an adaptation from prehistoric times. nobody is quite sure why they have it or why some lizards kept their third eyes while some species of lizards didn't. personally, I think they have it to better sense heat and movement from above, since they like to hangout in trees. but that's just my opinion :)
