Before the 876 area code was created in 1997, Jamaica was in area code 809.

Until it broke up in the late 1990's, with each island country or territory getting its own unique area code, area code 809 served the U.S. territories of Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands, plus Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Cayman Islands, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts & Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, Trinidad & Tobago, and the Turks & Caicos Islands.

Area code 809 now serves only the Dominican Republic, which also has overlay codes 829 and 849.
