If you are talking about making a decision of some kind and you don't know what to do then do nothing until you think it through very well and use your gut instincts to assist you in making the decision. If you are talking about doing something because you are bored and don't have anything to do then just do something, anything that you like doing to keep you busy.
Well, my friend, this is the point where one accomplishes themselves and become outstanding, or fool themselves and, well, look foolish! Being honest is usually a good way forward. Being honest with yourself and then with your friend. Sometimes the moves we don't plan become the most important of all, you just got to make the right move.
