The purpose of this letter is so that Tom Sawyer can complicate the escape plan of Jim. By sending this letter, fifteen farmers with guns show up to the house and protect Jim's shed making it even harder to escape. Tom did this simply for the thrill, he already knew that Jim was free at this point in the novel.
