What court case lead to civil war?

It was the Supreme Court's verdict in refusing freedom to the slave Dred Scott.

The reasons given were that slavery was protected by the Constitution in the spirit in which the Founding Fathers defined a man's 'property' - i.e. it included slaves as a form of property.
