Primarily, Canada was removed from French control by the British, and adopted British forms of law and government. Yet there was a continued resident French culture in Quebec. Canada remained a colonial dominion for another century after the US colonies became independent. The British, although their Empire later slipped away, were able to prevent the US from expanding farther north into the North American continent. They were, however, reluctant to assert control over Alaska, which would have been a natural western addition to Canada had the US not purchased it from Russia.
