What allows humans to have different traits from each other?

They have different genes.

The different genes they get from they're parents. There is something that happens in MeiOSis where the chromosomes kind of switch spots, it's called Crossing Over. See the website in the related link - I know it's a childrens website, but it explains it well. Its under Step One.
