When almost all the molecules of an acid break apart in water, the acid is classified as a strong acid. Strong acids, such as hydrochloric acid (HCl) and sulfuric acid (H₂SO₄), fully dissociate into their ions in an aqueous solution, resulting in a high concentration of hydrogen ions (H⁺) and contributing to a lower pH. This complete ionization distinguishes strong acids from weak acids, which only partially dissociate in solution.
