Why did Chinua Achebe leave Nigeria?

Chinua Achebe left Nigeria primarily due to the political and social turmoil resulting from the Nigerian Civil War (1967-1970). Concerned about the impact of the conflict on his life and work, he sought refuge in the United States, where he continued to write and engage in academic pursuits. Achebe's move was also influenced by his desire to promote understanding of African literature and issues on a global stage, which he felt was better achieved from abroad.
