How is anime related in literature?

There are times writers draw their inspiration from literature. Like in Fushii Yuugi, it was inspired by the Chinese Literature. Also, authors might also draw characters from history and use their creative license to fit said characters in the story. An good example is this are some of the characters in Rurouni kenshin.
