What are possible fates of neurotransmitters?

Neurotransmitters can have several fates after their release into the synaptic cleft. They may bind to receptors on the postsynaptic neuron, triggering a response. Afterward, they can be reabsorbed by the presynaptic neuron through a process called reuptake, or they may be broken down by enzymes in the synapse. Additionally, some neurotransmitters can diffuse away from the synapse, reducing their concentration and effect.
