Why was Sultan Qaboos bin Said chosen to be a leader?

Sultan Qaboos was not "chosen" . He was Said bin Taimur's son and disagreed with the way his father ran the country. In 1970 he took power in a bloodless palace coup at Salalah and told his father he had to go.
